Skin Care Routine.....Where to Start?

When it comes to skin care many of us tend to grab a wide variety of products and then get overwhelmed with the how, when, and why. We read about the newest products and ingredients, tricks, the right or wrong way to apply skin care, and etc.,. All of this information can be helpful, but it can also be a bit overwhelming and confusing in the beginning. There are levels to this, but lets keep it cute and ease in.

So where do we begin this journey…

First, you need to know your skin type… are you oily, dry, acne prone, combination? This will help you pick products for your skin needs.

A Basic Routine looks like:

  • Cleanse

  • Moisturize

  • SPF (morning only)

This is a great place to start. It doesn’t overwhelm you and allows you to form a habit. Once you are comfortable begin adding more steps and products to enhance your routine.

Your routine will start to look similar to this:

  • Cleanse

  • Tone

  • Serum

  • Moisturize

  • Eye Cream

  • SPF (daytime)

A few things to remember…

Don’t over complicate it…Just because you read about the numerous steps and products the person you admire the most is using, doesn’t mean you need to mimic their routine. Make sure the steps you have are doable with your lifestyle and for your skin type.

Wash your face at night…I can not tell you how many people let me know they don’t always wash their face before bed. Please, please wash your face at night. Your skin absorbs everything while you are sleeping. Dirt, excess oils, sunscreen, makeup are the last things you want to be absorbed.

Sunscreen is not an option, IT IS A MUST. Wear it everyday, all year long. It keeps your skin protected from sun damage and aids in anti-aging.

Remember what works for one person might not work for you. No matter how much your skin has in common with another individual, their favorite products may not be as effective on you. Way of life, diet, environment, hormones are all things that can alter the type of products your skin will need versus someone else.

Only introduce a few products to your skin at a time. I personally recommend 1-2 products at a time. It allows you see what is or is not working without having to guess which product you need to eliminate.

Be patient. Finding the right products takes time. Healing your skin takes time. Allowing products to work can take time. Great skin doesn’t happen overnight as much as we wish it did. And you may go through a lot of different products before finding the right one.

Have fun and mask a few times a week. A face mask and a nice glass of wine makes for the perfect chill combination. Sheet masks are life!

Where ever you are in your skin journey don’t stress and just take your time. Breakouts are normal! You can have clear skin one day and a pimple the next. YOU’RE STILL GLOWING!
