Caring for Oily Skin Type

As a person that has oily skin I can understand and relate to the shift of… “oh my skin is so glowy” to “omg it looks like I put a jar of grease all over my t-zone”. But this post is not about the dislikes, this post is about the likes and how to care for oily skin, because lets face it, it’s not going anywhere!

Some fun benefits of oily skin

The oil production helps to moisturize your skin, which can aid in keeping wrinkles away longer than other skin types.

You always have a “glow” whether you planned it or not, so just embrace that first hour after your skin care routine. Take a selfie, go out to brunch and show it off!

Your moisturizer will last for ever! …(well, maybe not forever, but let a girl dream lol). While you still need to be using a moisturizer, you won’t need to slather it on. A little goes a long way on oily skin types. Also, any products like hydrating mask and serums you incorporate won’t be used as often so you will definitely be getting your moneys worth.

Now that we have shown our oily skin some appreciation let’s talk caring for it

The cleansing step is so important in your skin care routine. I recommend double cleansing for all skin types, but especially with oily skin. You want to make sure you are successfully removing dirt, oil buildup, sunscreen, make up while both treating your skin needs and not stripping it of its natural oils. Some ingredients to look for in your cleansers are salicylic acid, willow bark, tea tree, glycolic acid.

Recommendations: Right now I am loving and using Cosmedix clarify salicylic acid foaming cleanser. It has been amazing for my oily blemish prone skin and affective against my maskne. A few others that are great options are Eminence clear skin probiotic cleanser and Epicuren citrus herbal cleanser.

Use a toner. Toning is an extra step, but I definitely suggest it for oily skin. It will aid in making sure all of the dirt/excess oil has been removed, which will eliminate build up and reduce breakouts. The right toner can also help reduce the amount of excess oil your skin produces during the day. Use toners that are going to be exfoliating or purifying but not drying.

Recommendations: Epicuren brazilian propolis mist is a favorite of mine. Cosmedix purity balance exfoliating prep toner is amazing, as well. I usually switch between the two.

Clay masks are your best friend. They absorb the excess oil and remove toxins, both which aid in cleaning the pores. There are many different types…exfoliating clay masks, brighten clay mask, clearing clay mask, and the list goes on. For oily skin types, purifying or exfoliating clay masks would be a good place to start.

Recommendations: Epicuren volcanic clay purifying mask is one of my go to’s. It clears pores and leaves skin feeling soft and refreshed. Fresh umbrian clay purifying mask and Epicuren clarify polishing mask are a few that I love to use, as well.

Moisturize your skin. I know we are oily, but don’t skip your moisturizer. You still want to lightly hydrate the skin, morning and night. Not moisturizing your skin will force your skin to over produce oil in an attempt to hydrate itself, and can cause more oiliness and breakouts. Oil-free moisturizers or light serums can be great options. I personally use a light serum and moisturizing sunscreen in the mornings, and a moisturizer at night.

Recommendations: Peach Slices citrus honey aqua glow moisture-gel is great. Epicuren facial emulsion enzyme moisturizer is my go to for night time but if you are really on the oily side try the Epicuren acidophilus probiotic facial cream. Peach and Lily glass skin refining serum and Cosmedix shineless oil free moisturizer are also some great options that I have come across.

A few other things to remember when caring for your oily skin type

Always remember to protect your skin by wearing an SPF in the daytime. During the cold weather months use a hydrating mask maybe once a week if you are feeling dry. Don’t use overly drying products as it will only cause your skin to produce more oil. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Jelly mask can be a great addition to your routine. My personal favorite is First Aid Beauty ginger and tumeric vitamin c jelly mask.
